Ford Repair: starter, ford aerostar, startr


Question
put new starter in august on ford aerostar 3.0 and now it just clicks and wont start how do I know if its the starter or the relay solnoid on the fender well. Thanks for any help its freezing out here in the drivway live in Cleveland Oh

Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
What you need to do is get a 12volt test light and check the solenoid. To check the solenoid attatch the clip side of the test light to the neg (-) post of the battery, then attatch the pin/lead side of it to the terminals of the fenderwall mounted solenoid. Have another person try to start the vehicle. You will notice that there are three points at which wires can connect to the solenoid. You want the one that goes down to the starter. See if the test light, lights up.............IF it does, check for power at the other end of the cable going to the starter. If power is there, replace the starter. If NO POWER is present at the solenoid on the connection to the starter, replace the solenoid. You might also want to try and lightly tap the back side of the startr with a small hammer. Sometimes the brushed in it get "frozen"
