Ford Repair: replacing rusted top of Mustang, surface rust, serious money

Question
I'm considering purchasing a 1968 Mustang that has a vinyl top under which it seems the entire roof of the car is rusted out. How much should I budget for repairing the top and what is the best way to go about it?

Thanks,

Jim

Answer
Jim-

It depends on the extent of the rust.  If it's just some surface rust you should be able to have it ground off.  If it's more penetrating, however, you're looking at some serious money and fabrication to have it replaced.  If it's just on the surface, expect to pay around $1,000 or so...maybe a little less.  If the whole tops needs to be replaced, the sky is almost the limit.  You'd have to have it at a specialty shop and they'd need to do serious work replacing the entire roof.  Hope this helps.
