Ford Repair: My clutch needs help, and I do too., clutch setup, clutch cable

Question
Hey Steve,
I bought a 1994 3.8L V6 Mustang a few months ago and the clutch just seems to have died on me.  While driving the other day I noticed the clutch pedal was slower to rise from the floor than usual while I was driving and the next day it stopped serving any function at all. Over the last couple of months the pedal was making a squeaking noise as I pressed it down and a chirping noise when the clutch was fully engaged. I thought it was just the result of being 10 years old, but I now read that it can be a symptom of a much bigger problem. The pedal now takes a real long time to rise from the floor, and the clutch does not seem to be engaged at all (I can put it in gear and the car does not move and the engine rotates freely). This is the only car I have ever driven with a manual gearbox and so I never noticed something wrong, or going wrong with it. I swear I am not a car abuser, but I cannot speak for any of the previous owners, it is just the type of car you beat up, but it looks great! Any help will be greatly appreciated and I will be eternally greatful. I would like to do the repair myself with my father who has knowledge far beyond myown, let me know if this may be possible because I really can't afford a garage right now.
Thank You
-JB

Answer
John-

Abusing a V6 Mustang?  That's just mean.  Flog the V8s all you want...but torturing a V6 is just wrong.  My bet is that your clutch cable has stretched or otherwise become out of adjustment in some other way.  Steeda sells a great firewall adjustable quadrant that would do wonders for your clutch setup.  This is all probably just a result of age...it takes a lot more work to get a 10 year old clutch going than a new one.  This may end up being a garage job since most home garages don't have the tools to do this kind of work.  But grab a Chiltons manual and flip through it to see if it's doable at home before forking over the money for a shop.  Hope this helps.
