I HAVE A 92 ACCORD WAGON EX 4 CYL AUTOMATIC WITH 172,000 MILES.  A CLUNKING NOISE HAS BEGUN WHEN I BEGIN TO MOVE FROM A STOPPED POSITION.  THE HARDER I ACCELERATE, THE MORE PRONOUNCED THE CLUNKING.  TURNING LEFT OR RIGHT DOES NOT SEEM TO WORSEN THIS MILD CLUNKING SOUND.  A BUMPIER ROAD SEEMS TO MAKE IT WORSE.  DRIVING AT A STEADY SPEED ALMOST MAKES THE SOUND GO AWAY.  TIRES ARE ALL IN BALANCE WITH SUFFICIENT AIR IN THEM.  COASTING WITH THE TRANSMISSION IN NEUTRAL DOES NOT LESSEN THE NOISE.  I CAN FEEL THE CLUNKING VIBRATION SLIGHTLY IN THE STEERING WHEEL.  MOVING THE WHEEL BACK AND FORTH, LEFT OR RIGHT DOES NOT SEEM TO AFFECT THE NOISE.  I HAVEN'T DRIVEN THE CAR ON THE FREEWAYS SINCE THIS PROBLEM STARTED THIS MORNING.  SEVERAL DAYS AGO ON THE HIGHWAY, THE CAR TRACKED STRAIGHT AND SMOOTH AT 65 MPH.  ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE APPRECIATED.  THANK YOU.

Steve:
Usually a clunking noise is caused by an excessive movement or clearance in a suspension component. Check the suspension for soft, cracked damaged or worn bushings. Other things to check for would be suspension mounting bolts or loose wheel bearing.
Hope this helps.

The problem turned out to be a left outer tierod.  I had the right outer tierod replaced 18 months ago so I assume the problem was the left one.  I had them both replaced and the car realligned.  It runs straight and tight now.  I'm still surprised that the symptoms came up so fast, as this type of problem comes on very slowly in my past experience.  Thanks again for your help!  This pushes off a new car decision comfortably into the future as I still love this wagon and they don't sell new Honda wagons in the USA.  Keep up the great work!

Thanks for the follow-up as I many times wonder if I'm really helping (I do not get a lot of feedback). I know I wasn't real specific with your problem but I do take time on every question, I just hope I steer people in the right direction. Thanks again.
