Honda Repair: Civic-Malfuction Indicator Light, honda civic dx, 2000 honda civic dx

Question
Hey Bill,
About 2 weeks ago the MIL - Malfuction Indicator Light in my 2000 Honda Civic DX came on.  The car has been running fine so I didn't bother to get it checked but for the last couple of days when I stop at a red light, the car shakes a little before settling down. I'm pretty sure something's wrong.  Should I get it checked by the dealer or a mechanic and how much do you think it will cost. I appreciate your help.
Sincerely,
Evan

Answer
Evan:
I usually go to a mechanic that I feel comfortable with and that I do not think will rip me off. This is something that takes time or a referal from someone you trust. I have taken my car to the dealer on occasion but not always had them do the work because you are going to pay quite a bit more there. Ask a neighbor where they take their car and if they would recommend them. I would not take my car to a muffler shop, tire store or gas station (if you find one with a mechanic), go to a repair shop. As for what is wrong with your car, it could be an oxygen sensor or any number of things, sorry I can't be more specific. I never get out of the repair shop for less than $125-$150.
Hope this helps
Bill
