Over the past 2 days, the Check Engine Light has come on each time the car is driven.  It doesn't come on immediately, but stays on until the car is turned off.  Once the car is started again the light is not on.  Also, the speedometer suddenly stopped working.  Any ideas.

Your problem is a bad speed sensor. It sits on top of the transmission. It controls your speedometer. That is why your light is coming on. The computer in your car is not getting a signal from the sensor, so it puts the light on. This is a common problem and will probally set you back 2-300 dollars to fix.
