Honda Repair: Auto Transmissions, auto transmissions, rebild

Question
Bought a 83 Accord Auto trans w/od. Tranny fluid drained out black. 107k orig mi. Put in a friction additive w/ tranny fluid change. Tranny is still slipping. Is the only way out to replace/rebuild? any tricks you know of? Thanks

Answer
Andy. Hi. The first thing you did wrong was put an additive in the trans. That never helps Hondas, it only makes the situation worse.
Chances are the damage is already done. (probally even before you put the additive in.)
The only chance you have is to drain all the old fluid out, put fresh "Honda ATF" in the car, then start it up and run thru all the gears. Shut the car off and repeat the procedure. Refill the trans once more and cross your fingers. (you will need 5 bottles of ATF)
If it still slips, then you must go with a rebilt or Salvage transmission. If you go the salvage route, check and see thier warranty. Some junk yards will not pay the installation if the first trans is bad. In that case you will be paying someone to do the job twice. As far as rebuilding the trans., I would not go that route. It is too time consuming and sometimes more costly than a rebild. You may want to check with Cottman first. They are the most reasonable and knowledgable.
Good luck!
