Hyundai Repair: evap system, hyundai sonata, evaporative emissions

Question
This problem has been going on for a couple of weeks. The first time it came up is when I was low on gas so I put some gas in and went to start it. It would only start when I feathered the gas pedal. Then the check engine light came on it said I have a evap system leak. The car runs fine but it happened again a couple of days ago and the last code was po446. 1999 hyundai sonata 2.4 V6. I think its the seleniod but not positive.

Answer
All these symptoms can be caused by a stuck open purge control valve.  In fact, the difficulty starting can only be linked to this cause.  The code P0446 indicates a vacuum in the evaporative emissions system, which can be caused by a stuck open purge control valve as well as a host of other reasons.  Since we know the valve needs to be replaced, start with that, clear the codes by disconnecting the battery for 10 seconds, and see if the check engine lamp returns again.
