Hyundai Repair: Overdrive solenoid, technical service bulletins, hyundai sonata

Question
i have a 2000 Hyundai sonata 2.5 v6 engine. It will not switch out of first gear and i recently had it put on the check engine box a at a local autozone and it said it was the overdrive solenoid. Do you know how many solenoids a sonata has because some are telling me its 1 and some are saying its 5. Its a automatic transmission and it will crank up fine but it just wont switch out of 1st gear. Please help???

Answer
The 2000 Sonata has five solenoids in the transmission if my memory is correct.  A problem with this solenoid shouldn't make the transmission not shift out of first gear, however-- while the problem is occurring, it should cause the transmission to remain permanently in 3rd gear.

I'd feel better about the diagnosis if you gave me the trouble code (likely of the form P07xx where each x represents a digit) retrieved rather than Auto Zone's interpretation of what it means, which is often inaccurate.

If you plan on attempting to service this yourself, I'd recommend the following:
-- Report the actual trouble code number to me so I can verify the diagnosis.  If necessary, have the car re-scanned to retrieve the code.
-- Register for an account at www.hmaservice.com.  There are numerous technical service bulletins (TSBs) regarding transmission diagnostic trouble codes, what they mean, and how to repair them.  Chances are good that no matter what your code, there is a TSB with information relating to it.  For now, review TSB 09-AT-018, as it describes and illustrates the repair of problems causing solenoid trouble codes.
