-----Question-----
I have a 2000 Elantra where the key will not turn. I am sure this means that I need to change the ignition switch. How do I remove the old one and install the new one? Is this something better left to a professional? I see part listings for a ignition lock cylinder and a ignition switch, which do I need?

Thanks

If you cannot turn the lock, you'll need to replace the entire steering lock and housing assembly.  You won't be able to remove the lock cylinder from the housing without being able to turn the lock.

To do this, you'll need to remove the tamper proof bolts or break the housing off the steering column.  I usually remove the bolts using a hammer and punch to get the bolts to turn, but you can also try cutting a slot in the bolt head and using a screwdriver.  This process will take some patience.  I suppose you'll be the best judge as to whether you're comfortable doing all of this.

If you can get the key to turn, you can replace just the lock cylinder.  You'll need to remove the steering column covers to access the lock assembly.  Once you have the key turned to the "on" position, you'll need to locate  the locking pin that holds the lock cylinder in the housing.  It'll be in a small hole about 1/16" to 1/8" in diameter.  Using a pick or similar tool, press the pin in, and while holding it in, pull the lock cylinder out with the key.  The pin won't push in unless the key is turned to the "on" position.
