Hyundai Repair: 1997 Hyundai Accent Timing Belt, hyundai accent, timing belt

Question
Hey I saw that you had the timing belt snap on the same car that I have now and I was told that the timing belt should be replaced after 60,000 miles. My car now has 82,000 miles. I would like to know if I should get my timing belt replaced ASAP before it snaps or do I have more time. Do you remember how many miles your car was at when the timing belt finally snapped? I appreciate any response...

Answer
I'm not the person that had the timing belt snap, but I may have answered his question.  Since I do not see your (or any questioner's) contact information, I have no way of putting you in contact with that person.

But here are my thoughts.  The recommendation for the timing belt is to replace every 4 years or 60,000 miles.  Although your car has 82k, it's also about 9 years old.  Rubber deteriorates both by stress, and by age.  At 9 years, I'd be very concerned about the timing belt.  Although this vehicle has very few timing belt problems, you're at an age where your timing belt is actually likely to fail due to aging issues.  I think it's in your best interests to replace the belt now.

I cannot tell you when the belt will break.  But if it does, it's likely to do engine damage that will cost thousands of dollars to fix.  It's better to pony up the money for the belt than suffer the consequences for not doing so soon enough.
