Isuzu Repair: recurrent fuel pump problems, voltage drop test, fuel pump relay

Question
I own a 1997 Honda Passport (basically the same vehicle as an Isuzu Rodeo).  Over the past year I have had to have the fuel pump replaced 5 times!  I've used two different mechanics along with 3 different brands of fuel pumps.  Usually the pump will work okay for 2 to 3 months and then quit leaving me and my 3 year old son stranded.  I've noticed that I can predict the fuel pump quitting because a week before it breaks down the car will lose momentum for about one or two seconds when I am driving and only when I am pushing the gas pedal to excel from a complete stop. It does not do this all week or even every day but sure enough it will happen several times approximately a week before the fuel pump goes out.  Any suggestions as to what is causing all these fuel pumps to quit working?  I am desperate to fix the real problem because constantly replacing the fuel pump is costing too much money.  Thanks for your help.

Answer
Wow Kristel. I think you are'nt fixing the real source of your problem. If the fuel pump is burning up, then you have a short in your relay running from your fuel pump wiring harness to your fuel pump relay. I would ask the mechaninc to do a voltage drop test on your vehicle to see if your having too much voltage going to the fuel pump. Also you have two connections that hook up on your fuel pump. If one of these is loose it will cause a short and fry your fuel pump eventually. I would look into a low voltage issue tho. Low voltage causes high amperage, high amperage causes high heat, high electricity burns up the parts necessary to run a fuel pump.
