Jaguar Repair: 84 XJ6 loss of power, continued, land rover discovery, fuel pressure regulator

Question
Howard,
I have experience with my '99 Land Rover Discovery and part number issues, as in I have to look up under '98 Disco, but the fuel pressure regulator I ordered from Advance Auto for my '84 XJ6 was wrong - wrong fitting types - side fitting not threaded, and I only found the right one by increasing the year to '87. Is this something you have seen, or have there possibly been modifications made to my '84? Mine is at the end of the fuel rail, near cylinder 6, not in the middle as specified on "earlier" models. Just a fluke, auto parts store goof? This costs me a day or two, but no biggie...
Thanks,
Michael

Answer
Yes, earlier Ser III cars had the regulator in the middle of the rail with hose connections and the later cars had it at the front with one threaded connection. I don't remember what year the change was made but you can look at one of the Jag parts web sites to make sure. Most auto parts stores get many of the year changes wrong. I remember that the threaded regulator started on 84 cars and continued to 87.
