Jaguar Repair: XJ6 (1987) fuel tank L/R switch, 1987 jaguar xj6, charcoal canister

Question
Is it possible to by-pass or remove the left/right fuel valve/switch in my 1987 Jaguar XJ6?
What must I do to have fuel drawn from both tanks simultaniously?
Also there is a ticking sound coming from my carbon canister it is rather random patterned and it stops if I pinch the vaccum line.
My car is converted to Chevy Small Block would it do any damage if I just remove the vaccum lines and carbon canister completely?
My car is EPA exempt in Virginia.
Thanks,
Dwight

Answer
Hi Dwight,
The switching system could be eliminated by replacing the fuel supply switching valve with a "Y" pipe so as to draw fuel form both tanks. However, you will also need to replace the right hand return valve with a straight pipe and disconnect the left switching valve electrical connection. Because most of the fuel that is pumped forward to the fuel rail is returned to which ever tank is being used so you need to do this if you are drawing fuel from both tanks. You will need to keep the gauge switching because when the fuel is returned, there may be more resistance to fuel flow in one side than the other thus it can in time deplete more fuel form one tank than the other. Sitting over night it will even up but could be a problem on a long trip. It may or may not be a problem depending on how much difference in resistance to fuel flow on the return lines.

It would be easier to just fix the system.
I don't know of anything in a charcoal canister that can make any noise. Are you sure it is the canister or the pressure valve near the canister? Or even the purge valve just inside on the fender well?
