Jeep Repair: Gauges dont work, jeep gran cherokee, gas gauge

Hi Eric, On my Sisters '99 Jeep Gran Cherokee limited the tempature,and gas gauge does not work and the electric windows do not work also. I was wondering if you could shed some light so she doesn't get ripped off by the dealer. They said it could be ignition switch or harness which they said could be $1,000.00. I was wondering why the dealers could not pinpoint the problem while she was there. I have a scanner but live to far. Thanks

I have noticed with jeeps that the harnesses tend to get loose and slide out a little bit on both the side of the computer and the back of the instrument cluster, i would try and wiggle those wires at the computer and back of the cluster and maybe run a scan before i start spending $1,000.00 on a new ignition switch or harness,  although it may sound simple i would start there,
