Jeep Repair: transmission, reveres, xmission


Question
 1987 cherokee 4.0L inline 6 cyl.A/W4 automatic xmission.                                                                       The problem is this, while driving ,suddenly,the trans. stopped doing anything! Except, moving foward in 1st gear without shifting ,regardless of speed or RPM.In addition no reveres at all.Fluid levels fine  Would appreciate any suggestion on how to proceed.

   I have bad news for you. That's the first sign of the transmission going South. The fact that you still have 1st gear means there's still hope. It would be ideal to have the linkage to the transmission checked for problems, as this does happen. You can also do a basic check of the linkage, by going underneath the Jeep, while a helper shifts the slelector back and forth. This is a way to look for signs of wear. I hope this helps you.
