Land Rover Repair: transmission, obd ii scan tool, electronic transmission control

hi i have a disco2 2000 and recently sent it in because it was locked and i had no key. after new keys where made up and the vehicle was open the mechanic tolled me the vehicle was only selecting 3rd and reverse gears. i find this some what strange because the problem was never there before and would like to know what could have caused this to happen and how to go about solving the problem.

It sounds like the electronic transmission control has gone into limp home mode.  You will need to find a shop with Land Rover test equipment to talk to that controller as a general OBD II scan tool will not do it.  The tests should reveal whatever is going on.  Perhaps it just needs to be reset.
