Land Rover Repair: Landrover 2005 V8, rocker assembly, push rods

Question
Hi, hope you can help. my 2005 Landrover V8 Petrol is a bit sick. When she started there was a real rattle noise coming from the engine which although it increased with the engine revs in did not increase at he same speed if you know what i mean. She also had a bad mis fire. I carried out a compression test and found two centre cylinders on the left bank had low compression ( one with 60 other with 0 ). So i removed the cylinder head and found both cylinders had a one bent valve in each of them, so new ones have been ordered. The reason i am sending the question is firstly could these be the rattle noise (as i half expected something to be sitting in the cylinder itself going by the noise it made ) and what could have caused the valves to bend as the engine does not have a belt to snap and all the other cylinders are fine. The push rods appear ok although the rocker assembly is very sludgy. The last thing i want to do is put it all back together and it does it agan straight away. Hope you can help..Thanks in advance ROB

Answer
If this is a 2005 vehicle, I'd say the timing chain probably slipped.  I'd look really close for other sludge-related damage if that is the case.  If the timing chain slipped you should remove the engine and pull the front covers to change the chains and guides, all of which are likely damaged
