Land Rover Repair: transfer case/ transmission problem, range rover classic, driveshafts

 I  STARTED  MY  CAR AND  DROVE  A SHORT  WHILE. THEN  I STARTED  AND  WITHIN  TWO  YARDS, I  HAD  A ROUND GRINDING  WHINING SOUND.  I STOPPED  THINKING AM  DRAGGING SOMETHING.  THEN  I STARTED  AND ENGAGED  DRIVE  THE SOUND  CAME  BACK  AND THE  CAR  WOULD  NOT  MOVE.  NO  PARKING  BRAKE  ,REVERSE  OR ANYTHING,  IT  SHIFT  L /H  AND THE  SAME  SOUND  OF WHINING  GRINDING  NOISE EVEN  IN  NEUTRAL  SOMEONE  TOW  ROPED  ME  AND  IT  MADE  THIS  SAME  NOISE.  IS  MY  TRANSMISSION  AND  TRANSFER  CASE  OUT  OR ONE  OF THEM.  THIS  HAD  NEVER  HAPPENED  BEFORE. IT  A 1993  RANGE ROVER  CLASSIC LWB  132,000   MILES  

Answer
It sounds like you may have a failure in the transfer case.  I'd suggest you pull the driveshafts and put the car on a lift and spin both axles.  See if they are damaged.  If not, you have to look at the transfer case or transmission.  You can probably feel a failure such as you describe by twisting the output shafts by hand on the lift.  The transfer case is the most likely culprit but by taking it apart and checking piece by piece you will identify the failure with certainty
