Land Rover Repair: engine died, radiator fans, head gasket

Question
My 1998 Range Rover 4.0 SE had a dead battery. when I jumped it my radiator fans relay switches fried. I then got new ones. Then my rover began overheating again and i had to stop and let it kool off twice before i got i to a shop in San fran. I had the thermostat replaced and their was circulation and it passed their road test so i drove it home to Nor-Cal. Then it began overheating again and boiling coolant out especially when i would shut the engine off. Its strange cus it boiled out the resevoire as well as sumwhere from underneath the driver side door. My engine was overheating and i let it kool after coolant boiled out. I then filled with water and drove it a few minutes and it stayed at normal temp. it than began loosing power as i tried to accelerate. It then started ticking when i tried to accelerate. It then stalled out and i pulled over. i turned the key back and then in accessory mode the temp gauge showed it to be extremely hot with a red light now on. Now once engine cooled off it would turn over but would not start. when it turned over it was an ill sounding turning over not normal. Do you think I blew my cylinder head, head gasket, or do you think my cylinder sleeve dropped. And if any of these are possibilities what would be the easier to make my range rover work again? Replace whole engine, or just repair the engine I have?

Answer
It sounds like you may have done some major damage.  I have written several articles on overheating on my website and car blog; I suggest reading those and then testing and making a decision as to what to do next.  If damaged, your best option may be  a used motor.
