Land Rover Repair: Keyless entry, car stereo store, stereo shop

Question
QUESTION: Hi Nigel,

I have a series 1 LR Disco 1996 and the keyless entry pads (connected to the car keys) are pretty much stuffed.  I am able to purchase a new control unit and entry pads from eBay, as LR Australia told me I couldn't get replacements.  What I was wondering was if I swap out the master controller module for the door solenoids will I cause the car to immobilize itself and never be able to start it again?  If I disconnect the battery from the car and then swap the controller will this allow me to use keyless entry again?
Many thanks - John

ANSWER: You should always disconnect the battery before connecting or disconnecting any module.  The security locking module, unless activated, will still allow the car to run.  These cars are very finicky at programming new remotes.  Your best bet may be to go to a local car stereo store and see if they can rig up an aftermarket remote.

QUESTION: Nigel,
I already have the remote control module.  I just want to switch out the LR original for this replacement.  I will not be replacing any of the door actuators.  Do I understand from your answer that if I remove the original LR central locking and replace it with the generic brand one I will still be able to start the car.  I was concerned that as soon as it is unplugged that it would immobilize the car and I would need to contact Land Rover to fix it.  An anti-theft strategy if you like.
I don't really want to use a car stereo shop as here in Australia they seem to be staffed by University Student (wanna be technicians).
Many thanks - John

Answer
No, you can unplug it as much as you want it will not immobilize the car.  These do suffer from moisture contamination.  it is very evident as the connectors become green and moldy.

If they can rig an aftermarket one correctly, it would start the car. Regardless, you may not be able to program the remote you bought.

Good luck!
