Land Rover Repair: Land Rover Disco overheating, temperature thermostat, distinct smell

Question
I have a 2000 Disco II and had the radiator replaced just a few years ago. Problem is temp gauge runs high, no heat, and there's a distinct smell of anti freeze when you get out of the car. Anti freeze was low - so filled it up - and problem went away. A few weeks later probem is back - in goes more anti freeze - so problem is resolved temporarily. I'm guessing I need a new radiator again? Sort of putting it off bc car is currently in shop for ABS TC and HD lights :( Any advice? Thanks.

Answer
Hi Michele,

it may not be your rad.  It could be that the coolant is boiling over because of trapped air OR your water pump is not circulating the coolant efficiently.  It could also be the temperature thermostat is not functioning properly.

The thermostat is the easiest and less costly to repair.  After your ABS, TC and HDC repair, you may want to wait off on any other expensive repairs.

Best of luck,
