Lexus Repair: Engine, toyota 4runner, head gasket

Question
I have a question. This refers to a Toyota not a Lexus, but you may be able to help. I have a 1996 Toyota 4runner that has 175,000 miles on it. I had the engine rebuilt last year. However the rebuilder wasn't educated enough to properly rebuild it. Anyway, the motor is losing antifreeze some way. It isn't leaking it and I smell antifreeze in the cabin of the car. It also is jerking when you put it in gear and accelerate down the road. It is sending a engine misfire code on cylinder number 5, and a white smoke is exiting the tailpipe.

I also wanted to ask if you had any advice on buying a salvage motor or any tips on inspecting one?

I'd greatly appreciate your help.

Answer
Hello Courtney, It sounds like it is leaking coolant in to that #5 cylinder. Could be a head gasket or head problem. What problem did the engine have that it needed to be rebuilt? When looking for a used motor I would just look for one that is a lot newer with lower miles. That engine was used up until a couple of years ago so you should be able to find a good one. Make sure they give you at least a 6 month warranty on the engine. Also find a experienced Toyota mechanic to install it.
