Lexus Repair: trans, lexus models, larry weaver

Question
Hello. I have 3 short questions about AUtomatic transmissions. (1). Can a transmission flush harm a transmission? (2). Why do no automatic transmissions have a drain plug like an engine? Only by changing the filter can a portion of the fluid be changed? (3). My car does not go into gear on cold mornings, why not? Thanks. Larry Weaver

Answer
Hello Larry, Yes transmission flushes can do harm to transmissions. While it is being flushed it can loosen up particles in the trans that can get stuck in the valve body of the trans causing shifting problems. Also all the Lexus models have drain plugs at the bottoms of the transmissions and rarely ever need the screen changed, I have never replaced a screen. Now by removing the drain plug you will not get all of the fluid out but if you are doing your transmission services every 15k miles like Lexus suggests and are using the proper fluid this is all you will need. As far as your car not going in to gear it can be several things, a valve body problem, shift switch, or pressure problem of some sort.
