Lincoln/Mercury Repair: 1992 Sable steering rack, power steering pump, variable control

Question
My 1992 Sable has variable assist steering that does not work properly. It
feels inconsistant when turning and driving as if someone is pulling the
wheel. A rubbery feel that's annoying and even dangerous. I changed the rack
with a rebuilt one along with the variable control that attaches to the rack. I
also changed out the little control box under the dash to no avail.
Would I be able to install a regular non-VAS steering rack? Thanks for any
help.

Answer
Hi Michael,

I had the same thing going on with a car at the shop. It was the power steering pump itself. Yeap, we changed the rack first, leaking anyway, but didn't fix it until we traded out pumps. One thing also, there is a sub-frame under the engine and transmission with mounts that can wear. When you get underneath it again, take a peak at those. There was a recall (expired now) that dealt with replacing the front or rear bolts and mounts. I can't remember so look closely. I would hate to see something happen to you if that came apart.
