-----Question-----
I'm having trouble with my 94 Villager. About a week ago, I drove to the store and parked. 2 minutes later the car would not start. When I returned about an hour later it started right up. The next day we went to the post office. Inside for probably 15 minutes, came out, the van won't start. Tried to start about an hour later, no go. My husband jiggled the battery cables and it started right up. We figured loose or dirty cables, so came home and cleaned and tightened everything, no go. Haven't been able to start it since. When I turn the key all gauges, lights, etc. come on, headlights are bright so I'm sure the battery is good. I'm thinking from what I've read so far, that it is something in the alarm system. For the last couple of months, I've noticed the alarm light continues blinking even when I'm driving. Now it does go off when I unlock the car like it is supposed to. I have tried to start the car while pushing the alarm reset switch, but still nothing. When I try to start the car all I get is one click and it sounds like it is coming from the box under the dash. Any help you can give me would be appreciated.

HI Brenda,

Is that a factory or after market alarm?

It is a factory installed alarm system. A Ford Motor Company alarm system 600 Plus.

Hi Brenda,

Well, sorry your having trouble with this. Something is not resetting in the system. Duh, right? In that year, Mercury doesn't show that the Villager came with an anti-theft device. Just saying, not knowing I am just reading their stuff they make available to guys like me. Now, I have owned 2 Villagers over the years. First was a 95 LS and the second was the 97 Nautica because you could never please my ex-wife. But they both had factory alarms or anti theft devices as Ford calls them. The light for the alarm, is it a small round light that is not inside the instrument panel? I don't think that it's the alarm system. Though it is odd that it flashes when you drive and it clicks. I mean that might be a secondary issue, and it would certainly not let the car start. Here is what I think it is, read carefully, it sounds exactly like what you have going on:

LIGHT TRUCK:
1993-96 VILLAGER

ISSUE:
There may be an extended crank time in the morning and/or intermittent stalling in high ambient temperatures (38°C/100°F). In addition, a no start may occur when the engine is still hot and the vehicle has been parked for a short period. This may be caused by the fuel pump check valve and gerotor.

ACTION:
Perform normal diagnostics and replace the fuel pump. The revised fuel pump has been improved to reduce the possibility of the above concerns. Refer to the appropriate year Villager Service Manual, Section 10-01, for removal and replacement procedures.

I suggest swapping out the fuel pump as discussed above.

Thanks for the info. One more question about that. If it is the fuel pump, should the engine crank at all? Mine doesn't. It did last week, but now nothing. Also, I still get the quick kind of humming sound when the key is turned to the "ON" position, but then nothing when I try to start.I was told that the quick humming sound is the fuel pump engaging. On the alarm system, the light is a small round light that is on the left side of the steering column.

Answer
Oh! Well then, it is the alarm and that is an after market alarm system. Ford alarm will flash "anti theft" behind the glass of your instrument panel near the fuel gauge or temp gauge. Also, Ford alarms reset with the key, not a switch. That being the case, I suggest you have someone remove the alarm system completely. It's not hard to do, that's why thieves steal cars with after market alarms anyway. I suggest taking it to a Best Buy or Circuit City and have them remove it. They shouldn't charge you more than an hour labor.
