1996 mercury sable does not go in forward gears does go in reverse when you put it in park it goes into park but shift indicator says reverse

Will it move forward if you put it in 2nd or 1st? If so, you need to have the Manual Lever Position Sensor adjusted. Your friendly Cottman Transmission man will do this for free.

You will need to have your transmission rebuilt. I wish I had something better for you on this, but it appears to be broken. I suggest staying with a name brand like Cottman Transmission because they offer a fair price and have a nation wide warranty. I'm sorry. If you where here in Vegas, I would love to help you.

Oh, hey, is the shifter seem real easy to move? If it does, then call a Cottman Transmission, have them tow your car to them and have them replace the shifter cable. I miss understood what your question was saying! I'm sorry... Looks like just a shifter cable, about a $300 repair.
