Lincoln/Mercury Repair: 1992 LTC Brakes and Suspension, malfunction indicator light, scan tool

Question
Go Red Sox!  (1)ABS - Can I get diagnostic codes for the ABS without special equipment, or with a volt meter?  Also, what are the codes?  (2) Air Suspension -  The rear drivers side is one inch + higher than the rear passenger side which causes the vehicle to tip slightly making the front passenger side look lower than the drivers side.  Your expert opinion, please.

Answer
Hey Dave,

Thanks for the Sox plug! Diagnostic Trouble Codes are stored in the computer and usually, not always, turn on the MIL or malfunction indicator light AKA check engine light. Most vehicles have three sections in the computer. ABS, Engine and Transmission. Some cars have even more. These can be read with a scan tool. There are many of them out there from cheap to insane in price. The one we use would come under the insane category. Your car has dozens of sensors, so to try and guess what it might be is next to impossible. I suggest taking your car to a place that can scan it. Cottman Transmission will do this for free.

The tipping part could be a ride control sensor. It's a little plastic arm at each wheel. It tells the computer its level. These are easily broken and can come disconnected without much effort. Check behind each wheel undernieth and make sure they are all working and connected. Make sure they can move freely. Key off when doing this.

Hope this helps.
