Lincoln/Mercury Repair: Possible Transmission Trouble?, mass air flow sensor, mass air flow

Question
Hi Pete,
I own a 1993 Mercury Tracer, 4 cyl., 1.9L. Milage:
?53800  (Not sure if it's 153,800 or 253,800 because the odometer has only 5 digits.)

At times the car "acts up". I can be going at 55 mph and when I slow down and try to accelerate again it seems to lose power. 40 mph is as fast it will go. It seems to "jerk' or "shimmy".
When I accelerate with the pedal down to the floor
the engine will rev high but will not go faster.

But when it "acts up" like this, sometimes I can slowly take my foot off the gas pedal and accelerate again, it goes back to normal.

Someone said it must be the Mass Air Flow Sensor.

Then I was told the transmission be slipping.
I have checked the fluid. It is not low.
It has a pinkish-brown color. I'm not sure if it is burnt but it does have a plastic smell to it.

The car does not "act up' like this every time but fairly often.

Pete, what do you think?  This car already needs a heater core but if it is having transmission problems guess I'll trade it in.
Thank you very much for your time, I appreciate it.
