Mazda Repair: Miata Clutch Noises, clutch service, performance clutch

Question
QUESTION: Hi, I have read some of your previous answers to the same problem I am hearing; that is, clutch squealing when engaging.  If I have this right, it sounds like my 1992 Miata with 88,000 miles is ready for a new clutch, T/O bearing, and various seals that you mentioned.
My question is this:
I am also hearing, intermittently, a little squealing noise as I shift.  There is also a slight resistance as I am going into a gear, this is also intermittent.  Is this relater to the T/O bearing problem, or is it something with the transmission that I need to deal with, preferably at the same time the clutch is done?
Thanks very much.

ANSWER: As part of a clutch service the release bearing (or T/O) and the pilot bearing should be changed.  Due to the age of your car I would suggest the rear main engine seal and the transmission front seal and gasket.  You will find the shifter base and the shifter body seals also due for replacement.  The shifter bushing (a white nylon bushing) is as needed to stiffen up the shifter throw.

The noises you are hearing are from the pilot bearing, when removed you may notice it to be rusty and not easily spun by hand, the T/O bearing usually has a large amount of run out (slack).

QUESTION: Should I use only OEM parts for the clutch/bearing/seal replacement?
Thanks

Answer
As a rule I use Mazda NEW parts.  Be sure to ask for NEW not remanufactured.  If the original got 88k stands to reason that the replacements will.  As for an upgrade ACT makes a really good performance clutch and sells the S1 kit (bearings, plate and disc) for $350.  A better friction material, more centrifugal springs and a heavier bite pressure.  About $80 more than Mazda's parts which are sold individually.
