Mazda Repair: 99 miata, fuel pumps, coil pack

Question
I have a 99 Mazda Miata, Auto...My check engine light came on while driving. next day it wouldnt start. Took to the mechanic and said it was the fuel pump so it was replaced and the car finally runs. However, the car hesitates when it is first started and shakes a little when at a stop.

Answer
Fuel pumps are very rare in Miatas that get daily use, though they do fail eventually though it will not cause the MIL to go on so you may have two issues to deal with.

The ignition coil pack has long since been an issue with 99 and 2000 models.  I would suggest doing preventative work first replacing the spark plugs and wires with a new set of NGK ones.  Since a plug or wire issue can result in the symptoms.  If the issue re-appears afterwards then the coil pack should then be suspected.  The ECU will illuminate the MIL (malfunction indictor lamp) and the code for "random misfire" should be indicated.  If the issue does not repeat itself for two drive cycles the MIL will go off.
