Mazda Repair: 1992 Mazda B2200 Pickup, brief hesitation, haynes manual

Question
QUESTION: Recently bought a '92 B2200 in excellent esthetic condition.
Truck has 133K. Starts easily cold or warm. Idle is a bit shaky when cold. Truck has severe hesitation/stutter when warm in all gears under load. It feels like bad gas, but I know it's not. Compression check shows: #1=172 #2=170 #3=160 #4=150. Previous owner thought maybe the carburetor needed to be rebuilt. No smoking or issues with appearance of oil.  Any suggestions appreciated.
ANSWER: Do you mean that the truck hesitates when you increase throttle? I mean, if you go from cruising to accelerating, does it hesitate for a bit and them accelerate properly?

QUESTION: The hesitation/stutter is constant once it appears. There is no brief hesitation and then proper acceleration. When I drove the truck to work the other morning, I had no problems on the way to work. When I drove it at lunch, the stutter appeared. When I drove it home several hours later, the power loss felt downright dangerous [this is a 12 mile mostly freeway commute]. As I said in the initial question, the original owner believed this to be a carburator problem. I'm not so sure.
Thanks for your help!

Answer
I wonder if the carburetor has sufficient fuel supply. It could be that there is a blockage in the pick-up tube in the tank, or a clogged fuel filter. The problem's worsening trend could be explained by a fuel filter that is becoming progressively more clogged.

Check the fuel filter first. Change it if it's clogged. If it's not clogged, check the fuel supply. The Haynes Manual for your truck does a good job of explaining how to measure the fuel supply.
