Mazda Repair: MAZDA PROTEGE 1994 FUEL SMELL AND HORN PROBLEM, fuse block, evaporative emissions

Question
Hi,

I have two problems with my 1994 Mazda Protege DX.

1.  There is a fuel smell from the rear.  The car starts fine and runs but there is the distinct smell of gas near the rear of the car.  I don't see any leaks, could it be a fuel pump or fuel filter problem?

2. The horn will not shut off. I had to take the fuse out to stop it from sounding.  Sometimes it will go off, but when I leave it overnite, it goes on by itself. What do you think is the problem ?

Thanks for your help !

Answer
Hi Rich thanks for asking
If you can smell fuel anywhere on your vehicle there is definitly a fuel system leak, the gas its self doesnt have to leak out but the fuel vapour will. You may have a leak in the evaporative emissions control system or you may have a crack or a hole in the top of the tank. you will have to get sombody to check that out.
With the horn--- its sounds like 1 of two problems. either the plate in te steering wheel for the horn is bent and is staying in constant contact to blow the horn all the time by its self or there is a relay for the horn usualy located by the fuse block. Sometimes those relays go bad. That is what opens and clkoses the contact to blow the horn, It has moving parts so it will wear out.
good luck
