Mercedes Benz repair: Transmission slipping., mercedes benz c230, tranny fluid

Question
QUESTION: Hello, I have a 98 Mercedes Benz C230 (non Compressor)and the transmission is slipping. The car was running fine until we changed the ATF. When we changed the fluid the fluid was completely black. After we changed the fluid, the transmission would slip on the 2nd shift. For example, when I'm driving to reach the 2nd shift the rpms would jump to about 2,500 rpms and sometimes 3,000 just when the car makes its shift. After that, the rpms would return to its normal rate. What could be the problem here? Thanks.
Jim. By the way, the car goes in reverse and all other shifts are good with the exception of the 2nd one.

ANSWER: did you change the filter also? I would recommend draining the fluid and changing the filter also also use MB tranny fluid, It would save you in the long run. Check out this post

could be your b1 spring means you would have to drop the tranny pan again

QUESTION: I think we did change the filter. I checked out the post and the only thing I got from there was the b1 spring malfunctioning. Anyways, my dad is a mechanic and he thinks that the only way the fluid could have turned black is if the clutches burned out. Is that true? Do you think it's worth it to buy a complete set of clutches and replace them? Thanks for your time.

Answer
I always try to do the cheapest car part to diagnose and of course the easiest If the tranny fluid was black chances are the fluid actually boiled over, probably will need to pull the transmission and rebuild the tranny, not too difficult, or you could just buy a new one on ebay or a local junkyard for around 300 -400 dollars well worth the investment even though I am not a c class fan due to the separate housing cover . I did do a head gasket change step by step with pics on a 98 c class on benzword.org so when you run into that problem(which always happens on the late 90s class check it out
