MG Car Repair: alternator, brass pins, rectifer

Question
Evening Barrie - I have recently purchased 78 mgb gt uk car, I was charging the battery and accidently knocked over the battery charger. This unfortunately broke the bakelite holder for the 2A fuse on the front of the Charger (an old crypton model) to hold the brass pins together I ran some light wire between them and thought nothing of it. Of course when I came back a few hours later the ignition light didnt come on when i turned the key to that position and when the car started the light then came on and stayed on. The fuel pump doesnt appear to be working either.
Have assumed that I have fried the alternator/rectifer so had a look at it, it appears to be a tvs model.
Was just wondering before I buy a new alternator (and battery  charger) is there a quick check I could do to confirm my assumtions. many thanks

Answer
Hi Laurence.  I don't think the alternator is at fault.  For the fault to lie with the alternator, the red light should COME ON with the ignition and STAY ON when you start the engine.

I note that the fuel pump has stopped working.  Can you check that when you turn the ignition on the wiper motor works OK?  If not, it could be that the ignition relay is faulty.  This relay regularly causes problems on the rubber bumper MGB and MGBGT.

If I am right, you may get away with nothing more than a replacement relay.
