MG Car Repair: 72 MGB conv, front wheel bearings, high octane gas

Question
My dad sold tds, b"s and a"s. I really screwed up! I put my MGB away in
my garage in good running condition. I haven't started it in 8 yrs! Is it now
a lost cause to get it back on the road. I would appreciate your
suggestions, go lucus electric!

Answer
Hi Nick.

You mean what to do to get it back on the road?

Drain ALL fluids including brake and clutch. Drain the fuel tank and lines. Clean out both carburetors. Inspect all rubber parts and replace any hard or cracked rubber parts. Replace the belts and any hoses that are hard or cracked. Replace all the flex fuel lines even if they look good. Replace the batteries or battery if it has been converted to a single 12v. Replace the thermostat. Replace new fluids, Hypoid gear oil for the differential, engine oil for the transmission, engine oil, new filter (be sure to fill the filter before installing) new antifreeze, DOT 4 brake and clutch fluid. High octane gas in the tank and test the fuel pump and overhaul or replace if necessary. Pump in some 90w gear oil into the steering rack. grease all fittings. Repack the front wheel bearings and examine the brake pads and replace if necessary and the same with the rear shoes.

Run a compression test and adjust valves and set the timing. Clean or replace the plugs. If it has points, replace the points and condenser.
Test the coil wire and plug wires and replace if necessary.

Spin the engine with the plugs out until you see oil pressure on the gauge. (usually 25 to 35 PSI)

Then and ONLY then can you start the engine and warm it up. You want to see 25 to 35 PSI oil pressure at idle and 45 to 70 PSI at 1500 RPM.
Watch the temp gauge to see that there are no signs of over heating.

Then you can drive the car. Anything less than that is asking for a failure.
