MG Car Repair: MG TD gear box - excess float on 1st gear, emery cloth, rear face

Question
QUESTION: Hello, I rebuilt my gear box 6000 miles ago ( 4yrs) with your wonderful video but
was unable to find a new 1st&2nd gear sliding hub.( it was only slightly worn )
since then the gear lever movement towards  neutral from first under load has
gotten worse. Any sugestions on how I can remedy this?   1952 #17664 Canada

ANSWER: Hi Keith.  At the rear of the 1st/2nd sliding hub you will observe a big gap due to wear.  Test this with feeler gauges.  On a worn gearbox this can be as much as 60 thou (1.5 mm)  If you have the patience, find a large washer (say 1mm thick) and file some slots into the hole so that it fits against the rear face of the hub and slides over the splines in the shaft.  You should ideally end up with a gap of about 20 thou (0.5 mm).  If it is now less than this, you could thin down the washer by rubbing it on a sheet of emery cloth, but remember to remove all traces of emery before fitting it.

QUESTION: Thanks you Barrie, does the slight wear on the splines need to be addressed
also? or will it be a none issue after the new washer is placed.

Thanks , Keith

Answer
Hi Keith.  Slight wear in a 60 year old part?  I would just live with it.  I did hear that new hubs are no longer available because the company that made them went into administration.  You could use Penrite 85W/140 gearbox oil to quieten the gearbox and take up any slack.
