MG Car Repair: MG B 1965 Roadster Just Died, but now ALIVE, self tapping screw, pertronix ignitor

Question
Hey Barrie. thankyou very much for sll the questions you answered and the knowledge you imparted on me.

Itook everything off sequentially to check the pounts and realised that on open they werent opening. at fist i just tried opening them and screwing down to the base plate, but realised the probem......
The screw to hold the points in place had threaded!!

I took the bolt out to be faced with the fact it was a self tapping screw someone had cut down to fit.

Imstole(borrowed) a bolt off the fan housing (as we dont need heating in oz!!LOL) and screwed it back on tight.

FIXED. What a bummer to be without a car for over a week for such a little thing, but glad i didnt call a garage to pick it up as it was in the middle of nowhere for such a ;litlle job.

The info you provided was priceless ad a reminder of a foggy memory of the old english engines ingnition.

Thank you so much.

Can you recommend any other type of ignition that is better and more sturdy than this one on the car

Al

Answer
Hi Al.  I recommend the Pertronix Ignitor system.  It is completely contained within the distributor, replacing the points and the condenser.  The two wires coming out of the distributor go to the two contacts on the coil.  Nothing to adjust, ever again.

Be careful to order the correct one, because your car is wired for POSITIVE EARTH unless you have changed it.
