MG Car Repair: mgb Engine, moss motors, oil cooler

Question
When first stated Engine takes approximately 30 seconds to register Oil Pressure..  Once it does it reads fine.

Cause/ Correction ??

Answer
Hi Randy.  I assume that you have a throw-away spin-on oil filter.  Some filters on the market do not have a one-way valve inside, so when you stop the engine, all the oil drains back into the sump pan.  It takes a long time to fill up the filter and the pipes to the remote oil cooler, hence the delay of 30 seconds before pressure builds up.

The tiny pipe from the engine to the gauge may also have air in it, which sometimes causes a slight delay, but only 2 or 3 seconds.  You can bleed the gauge by slackening the nut behind the gauge whilst the engine is running.  Wait till it dribbles a little oil, then re-tighten the nut.

I think your problem lies with the oil filter, so I recommend that you change it for a different make, preferably one bought from an MG specialist such as Moss Motors in the USA.
