MG Car Repair: Clutch and Transmission, speed gear boxes, mg car club

Question
The system requires a new thread.. however back to the saga: Last we spoke the engine will need to come out. Okay. I'm about to pull it ( and I have help). Question. Since this is a major endeavor, once out I might as well attend to a few other details. As a general rule what do you recommend I replace, renew or just plain fix.? What should I look for.?
I have no syncro in second gear and I'm contemplating having that fix ( or is it possible to install a new one with little to no experience in transmission rebuilds- but fairly good mechanical abilities).
The engine mounts are going to be replaced. any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks John Rau
PS ( Do you have any experience with finding and using Fordtype 9 5 speed gear boxes? If it hasn't been crushed there is a Ford-merkur in S.C. I might be able to get. It uses a 5 speed. but needs some modification.

Answer
Hi John
While the engine is out, check for any signs of oil running down behind the flywheel.  It is quite easy to pull the flywheel and replace the oil seal.

Stripping and rebuilding the gearbox is a major job.  If you want to do it yourself, I recommend that you buy a copy of my book `Barrie's Notes' available from the MG Car Club.  I devote a whole chapter to this topic.

Sorry, I have never fitted a type 9 gearbox to an MGB.
