MG Car Repair: 75 MGB FUEL PUMP, air leak, fuel tank

Question
MY 75 MGB HAS THE CLICKING NOISE OF THE FUEL PUMP WHEN STARTING AND THEN GETS UGLY, LOUD AND FAST AND NASTEY SOUNDING. IM GUESSING THE FUEL PUMP IS SHOT. CAN A COMPLETE NOVICE CHANGE IT OUT?DO YOU HAVE TO DROP THE FUEL TANK?, ITS FULL OF FUEL. AND WHERE KIND I FIND THE CHEAPEST ONE???

Answer
Hi Steve,
No you do not have to remove the fuel tank to remove the pump. But first you must know what the fast clicking means. It is not ugly nor nasty when it speeds up. It means it is just trying to pump air instead of fuel. Either there is an air leak in the line between the pump and the tank or the tank is out of fuel. You should check there before condeming the pump.
If you do need to replace the pump, it is mounted in the right front of the trunk.
