Answer
Not sure if you are a fool or an adventure seeker, but by the time you get her home you should be able to answer that question for yourself.  I think you will be proud of yourself, and driving her will put a smile on your face.  It works every time for me.

The MGB fuel tank holds 10 UK gallons, that's over 12 US gallons.  You should be able to get at least 25 mpg on a long journey, so take a can of gas with you and try to keep her half full.

The fuel gauge is connected to a sender which is clipped into the side of the gas tank under the right hand rear wheel arch.  Often, one of the two wires has come off.  The green wire with a black stripe is a push fit onto to the Lucar connector in the middle of the sender.  The black wire is an earth, which is also needed because the sender is mounted on a rubber seal that insulates it from the body.  New senders cost about $20 from Moss.

Behind the gauge you will find 4 wires.  One is the other end of the Green/black sender wire, the second is Light green with a dark green stripe.  These two wires connect to the two Lucar connectors on the back of the gauge.  It doesn't matter which way round.  (There should also be a black wire with a ring terminal for earth, and a red wire attached to the panel lamp bulb holder.  These do not affect the operation of the gauge).

One thing you should ask the previous owner, Is the car happy with unleaded gas?  I don't know when the modification was made for US cars, but all UK cars require hardened exhaust valve seats.
