MG Car Repair: Speedometer, speedometer needle, speedometer cable

Question
1973 MGB. Tachomter works fine but the speedometer needle bounces between 50 and 75 mph when I know I am maybe doing 40 mph. A friend suggested a new cable is all I need. Your thoughts? Also, I know nothing about installing a new speedometer cable. Am I going into deep water for a novic?

Answer
Hi Watson,
No, other than in spelling, it is kind of easy. Most of the time a jumping needle is just either a dry cable needing lube or a kink in the cable making the needle jump. Just remove the cable housing from the speedo head and remove the cable then lube it and if that don't fix it, you can purchase a inner cable kit at most auto parts stores. Don't forget to lube that one. A cable and housing are available at most of the British car parts houses. The Roadster Factory, Engel Import Parts, Moss Motors, Victoria British and British Parts North West to name a few.
