MG Car Repair: High Idle, stop screw, vacuum leak

Question
Just bought a 77 mgb, the idle seems to hold a little high when you come to a stop sign, after releasing cluth a little it goes back down, what can I do

Answer
Hi Doug,
Several things can make an engine idle fast. Idle stop screw set to high, Choke fast idle set too high, Choke not turning off when warmed up, Vacuum leak somewhere in hoses or intake manifold, timing set to far advanced. throttle cable or throttle plate sticking. Carburetor mixture set too lean or the air cleaner not in place correctly.

Any one or combination of these can make a fast idle. All of them need to be checked.
