Mitsubishi Repair: timing problem, vehicle speed sensor, timing belt tensioner

Question
Got a 03 eclipse spyder 3.0. i changed the water pump, timing belt, tensioner, tensioner adjuster, serpentine belt and power steering belt. followed procedure to do it and started it up. it ran good at start up but when we would rev it up it would sputter at 2 and 3,000 rpm. we plugged a computer reader up and it read an alternator current code. ok well that did not make any sense so we cleared it and it never came back. so then we took the car for a spin and it wanted to die at idle coming out of the driveway. while pulling out it read a vehicle speed sensor which is on the tranny on the other side of the car. we never got over that way so we cleared that. it never came back either. while on a test drive the car ran horrible and i never got out of 2nd gear. we pulled back in to go up a hill to the garage and it would barely pull the hill in 1st gear and i had the petal to the floor. we thought maybe timing was off but it wasn't. my brother in law, a guy from my work and i all looked it over good. were all mechanics and the guy at my work used to work at a mitsubishi dealer. he said it was timed right and we couldn't figure it out. we then hooked his advanced reader up to the computer and took it up the road and it read 22 degrees, which is slightly advanced. when we would give it gas it would go up to 30's and 40's advanced. one thing we didn't do was unhook the battery when we did all the work.

we took it to sam swope mitsubishi in louisville, ky where it is still at now. they looked over the timing belt and said it was good. they did a compression test and that passed. they said the fuel system and exhaust system was fine. what i dont get is that everything was just fine on the car when we did the timing belt and now all this. it didn't read any codes when we pulled it in and now this. I need a professionals opinion because i really don't think they have a clue at the dealership. i was thinking maybe the ignition module in the distributer, pcm, or computer. the car is not throwing any codes now and everybody i have asked about this is scratching their head and are clueless. even the guys at the dealership are at a loss for words and they are all scratching their heads.  LOL!!  Please help.

Answer
Steven,
It may be the computer or possibly a faulty cam/crank angle sensor.  It's tough to track down problems when the computer is faulty because it "thinks" it detects there's problems, throws bogus codes, and can cause timing issues.  This was a common occurrence older Mitsubishis (89-94) where they put underrated capacitors in their ECMs and they would fail and cause all sorts of ghost problems.  I'd recommend at least having the computer checked, the cam angle sensor checked, the MAS checked and the fuel supply system inspected.  If no one has done that so far, it can't hurt to look.
Good luck!
