Mitsubishi Repair: Semi-Random Engine Cut-out, camshaft position sensor, engine temp

Question
1993 Eclipse, 1.8 , manual
I bought this car about 3 weeks ago from an auction.  Example of problem: driving down the road about 45mph, shift into fifth, and engine dies, immediate zero rpms, no sputtering, gone.  This has happened 3 times.  It has also happened while going into third at 25mph.(it seems that it only happens during or just before a shift, rpms up to 3.5-4.5)  My remedy: wait about 40 seconds.  If you try to start immediately, no go, after about 10 seconds of rest, it will crank over, sputter until you turn it off.  Engine temp is always at normal or a little below when problem occurs.  I pulled the ECU reading that it could be bad, but no corrosion... also, I have no idea if this is related. If it is killed by bad shifting skills, then it is dead for a while also.  It wont fire back up immediately, a wait is the only cure.  Thank you for your time, I hope I have provided enough information.

P.S. under each instance, i have tried tapping or easing in the gas pedal during restart, but that only makes it die faster.

Answer
Alyason,
This sounds like your fuel supply is being cut.  This can happen if your rev limiter is detecting your RPMs are too high.  This shouldn't happen unless your RPMs exceed 7500.  But if there is a problem with your ECU, then it may be effecting the limiter.  Other items to check are your camshaft position sensor and the fuel pump itself.  If you can get the car to cut off when you rev it high enough while in neutral, your mechanic may have a better shot a finding the exact problem.
Good luck!
