Mitsubishi Repair: dashboard/tail lights, haynes manual, radio light

Question
I have a problem with the dashboard/tail lights out on 3000gt 1999.  I took your advice on previous questions related to fuses, replaced fuse and the relay following the neg battery cable process.  The fuse continues to blow.  The hazard lights, brake lights, turn signals, radio light and headlights all work.  All bulbs have been checked. I can't figure out whats up.  Mechanics says possible short.  How the heck will I find that?  Any ideas?

Answer
Katie: You need a repair manual for your car and a voltmeter; start with the battery and work yourself around the engine area checking the things that the repair manual will tell you to check. Till you find the problem. Surely you have a friend that might come and help you with this? Or get a shop to find the short. In that repair manual would be some wiring diagrams too, which might show you where the problem would be. Such as where the wires are forced through someplace or something on that order. Most parts stores have those repair manuals for around $20.00 and well worth the money. I would try to get a Haynes manual as it has fewer cars and years in it. Have you got your mechanic to check under the front fender(left side), to see if the splash guard might be gone or broken so the wires that run through that fender have come down so that the weather and the tire might be getting to them. That might be what is causing your short. If two wires one from the dash lights and the tail lights have rubbed together and so causing the short. I had that happen to an older car that I was working on, a 1998 model. Still the voltmeter and that repair manual would show you the way to find that short too. It will not be easy but it is the only way to do that now. Unless they find that the splash guard is gone where it should be keeping those wires safe. That is about all I can do for you. Hope this helps and God bless: Linda
