Mitsubishi Repair: Timing Belt on a 2003 Galant ES 4 cyl, timing belt replacement, camray

Question
The maintenance schedule calls for a timing belt replacement at 60K, but my local mechanic looked this up in an independent shop manual and it said 100K was more realistic. Isn't 60K way too conservative? As an example the manual on my 2002 Camray v6 says at the 90 K service. Let me know what you think?

Answer
Ken: Look at this way, I would listen to the car's maintenace schedule. I know some mechanic say what the hell 100,000 miles is soon enough. But still he is reading a book, manual. And how the car was drove, the care it got and the such. I am not saying you beat your car to death, either. But still all that adds up to getting that timing belt replaced. If the belt goes while you are driving the car, that mechanic of your's will make some good money, because we are talking bent valves. So an overhaul of the engine of your car. Besides down time for the car and let us not forget the cost. Why not be safe, get the timing belt replaced at 60,000 miles. And the car should easily do another 60,000 miles on the new belt. And no bent valves either. I am not trying to scare you but I really believe it is better to be safe than sorry. Listen to the car's maintenance schedule and get that timing belt replaced. Oh by the way don't tell your mechanic that some woman told you this. Just think about it and decide what is best for you as well as your car. Hope this helps and good luck! Linda
