Mitsubishi Repair: transmission fluid, mitsubishi eclipse, wise idea

Question
I am looking at buying a 2000 mitsubishi eclipse 81,000.  It is the sportmatic version (not the manual).  When it is not running the transmission fluid is fine, but when it is warm the fluid is at its lowest level.  Is this normal or should I be concerned?  Thanks, Eirn.

Answer
Hi Erin,

First, you should always check your transmission fluid when hot. Some dipsticks have hot and cold markings on either side of the dipstick but it is recommended you check it when hot as fluid is displaced throughout the transmission once you begin driving. As your vehicle sits overnight, the fluid will drain back to the pan and give you a false reading. I don't think the level change will affect you any because of these facts.

I would recommend you have the vehicle looked over by a mechanic you trust. Some may charge $50 to $100 for this service but as insurance to you and avoiding the possibility of paying far more in the future it's a small price to pay.

If you decide to purchase, it would be a wise idea to have all of the fluids changed immediately. That way you can assure they've been taken care of. As the vehicle has 81,000 miles on it, you may want to find out if it's had a new timing belt put on it yet. 60,000 to 80,000 is the recommendation on these and I'd hate for you to buy it and then have to spend the money for that, too. If it hasn't and you still decide to purchase the vehicle, should you have to replace the timing belt at any time it would be a wise idea to have the water pump replaced, too. The procedure is identical for replacing both as you have to remove the timing belt to get to the water pump.

Hope I've been of some assistance.

Good Luck!
