Mitsubishi Repair: Ignition Coil Wire possible culprit, hairline cracks, dodge shadow

Question
I cannot find a Dodge expert that is available right now, but this could happen to any car that has a distributor ignition system.  I have a 1994 Dodge Shadow V-6.  I have this car as a work car (second car).  It is a very good running car, but I am experiencing starting problems.  When the temperature is cold and moisture in the air, the car had problems starting.  I mean, it does starts, but I have to keep my foot on the gas for about 1 min, then easily ease my foot off the pedal to keep it going.  Then after that the car runs fine.

Just this past Friday, I was leaving work.  I work nights and in St Louis it was cold and rainy.  I had problems starting.  I had to do what I described above to keep it running.  So, I decided to do a small test.  When I got home, I removed the ignition coil wire and took it in the house with me so it could stay room temp and dry.  I let the car sit over night - cold and wet and rainy out.  After 6 or 7 hours, I went to start with the wire that has been in the house.  The weather was the same as it was when the car had problems starting.  The car started with out any problems.  I did notice on this wire, there was a tag (bar code) wrapped around it.  When I touched that tag, I felt small electrical charges coming from it.  Could it have small hairline cracks in it that allows moisture to get in and cause it to not start and eventually dries out?  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Answer
Kevin:Good question, I would say that your distributor cap is broken or cracked, as I have had cars that have troubles starting or don't run all that great when it is wet and cold. And for the most part it has turned out to be a broken or cracked distributor cap. But if taking out this wire and the car started without a problem. Then you have answered your own question. So get another ignition coil wire and see what happens. I don't see why not in that the wire could have small hairline cracks in it which allows moisture to get in. Don't say what miles your car has on it but 1994 it would have a lot I would say. I live in Iowa and so I know of the weather you speak of. Hope this helps and good luck!
